Dicentra (Bleeding Heart) – ‘Luxuriant’

For those who love the graceful, lacy look of bleeding hearts but long for flowers that last beyond spring, then try Dicentra ‘Luxuriant’. Perfect cherry-red hearts dangle like lockets on arching stems above mounds of fernlike foliage. Irresistible in drifts with shrubs, ferns or hostas. Prolific bloomer! Prefers shade but can even be grown in full sun. This is a fast-growing perennial with blooms that look wonderful against its blue-green foliage. Dicentra will bloom from May to October and is a major attractor to butterflies. It makes an excellent cut flower. Plant in mass with groundcovers, or in potted containers. Being an old-fashioned plant, it is a must in any landscape. This is a Herbaceous perennial.

Planting/Care Instructions +

Planting Instructions: May be planted in any well-drained soil. Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2 inches below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly. Easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in part shade. Prefers moist, humusy soils. Intolerant of wet soils in winter and dry soils in summer. Does poorly in the hot and humid conditions of the deep South.

Pests or Diseases: No serious insect or disease problems. Some susceptibility to aphid infestations.
