Fall-planted onions give gardeners a valuable head start and deliver strong, reliable results. By planting in the fall, onion sets establish roots before winter, allowing for earlier growth in spring, larger bulbs, and improved overall yields. Hardy and easy to grow, yellow onions are a kitchen staple—perfect for cooking and packed with flavor and nutrition. They thrive in full sun with well-drained, slightly acidic, fertile soil. Sets can be planted close together, harvesting every other plant early as green onions when tops reach about 6″ tall. Mature bulbs are ready when tops dry and fall over naturally, typically in late summer. Lift gently with a fork and store in cool, dry conditions for long-lasting use.
