The stems of the ‘Maidenhair Fern’ have arching fan-shaped segments of 5-9 fingers. A delicate fast growing variety. It is among the most beautiful of all ferns, “graceful” and “delicate” being the most recurring descriptors. The shiny black stems are lined on two sides with lacy leaves, in upright to fountaining sprays. This fern is a perennial and is deciduous in colder climates. Wiry stems are reddish-brown to black. Crosiers (coiled young fiddleheads) emerge pink in spring. This is a wetlands plant that does not flower or bloom. The attractive foliage is showcased in container plantings, foundation plantings, and groundcovers.
Ferns are perfect for the background of the garden or in a woodland setting. Their gracefulness makes them especially suited for companions to the Hosta. Performs well in sun but prefers partial shade.
