Prunus tomentosa (Nanking Cherry)

Nanking Cherry is great for either the border or mass plantings. Both the flowers and fruits are lovely. The pink buds open into white, fragrant, flowers in mid-spring. Harvest an abundance of flavorful, tart cherry-like fruit in early summer, from beautiful dwarf trees. These plants will grow into wide, bushy trees or can be planted 4-5 foot apart to make an edible hedge. The 1/2 inch diameter fruit can be eaten fresh or used in pies or jelly and the fruit is relished by birds. A very hardy and attractive ornamental. Great for wildlife plantings and windbreaks.

If you’re looking to attract Birds and Wildlife to your landscape, look no further than this DeGroot plant group. The characteristics that make these species so visually appealing – showy flowers, stunning fruit, winter color – are some of Nature’s most powerful draws for the animal kingdom.

Planting/Care Instructions +

Planting Instructions: Plant in part sun to full sun. It is tolerant of drought and needs a well drained soil. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2 inches below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly.

Pests or Diseases: No serious pest problems, but will exhibit symptoms of leaf spot diseases in wet seasons. Very prone to rabbit browsing.
