Fall-planted onions provide a strong start and dependable performance in the garden. Planting in the fall allows sets to establish roots before winter dormancy, leading to earlier spring growth, larger bulbs, and increased yields at harvest. White onions are a classic favorite—mild, versatile, and perfect for cooking or fresh use. Easy to grow and highly productive, they thrive in full sun with well-drained, slightly acidic, fertile soil. Plant sets close together and harvest every other one early as green onions when tops reach about 6″ tall. Mature bulbs are ready when tops dry and fall over naturally, typically in late summer. Lift gently with a fork and cure in a cool, dry location for long-lasting storage.
